November 24th, 2004 Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason's second round of openings was no quite as strong as last week's, but it was still more than enough to keep its first place finish at the international box office. Considering the results so far it should challenge for supremacy among the elite animated films and $400 million to $500 million isn't out of the question. Other highlights include $9.2 million in France, $5.6 million in Spain, $5.4 million in Italy, and $1.3 million in Belgium. and Spain.) Its biggest single market was the U.K., where the brought in $18.1 million, including sneak peaks, which was a Disney record. However, in others it fell short to either Finding Nemo, (France) or Shrek 2 (the U.K. The film opened number one in all twelve markets and in a few of the markets the film debuted in this week it was able to break the record for biggest debut by an animated films. With a nearly 3-1 lead over its nearest competitor, The Incredibles took top spot on the International Box Office charts this week with $44.3 million on 4,362 screens in 22 markets for a running tally of $59.1 million. This does not mean it is the favorite in any particular category, but it does help its chances of taking home some hardware on January 16th. Golden Globe Nominations were announced on Monday and as with the IFP Independent Spirit Awards, Sideways lead the pack with 7 nominations. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases and a few from the growing TV on DVD section, including the winners of the DVD Pick of the Week, Shaun of the Dead - Buy from Amazon and Napoleon Dynamite - Buy from Amazon More. Next week we should have a much better selection of DVDs.Įvery week films get a second chance at success from the home market or, in some cases, a first chance at success. In fact, there was only one contender for DVD Pick of the week, V for Vendetta - 2-Disc Special Edition, and since I'm 90% sure an even better Ultra Edition is coming out, it fails to win that coveted honor. The first full week of the month is usually quite busy, however, since the DVD coming out tomorrow had to be shipped in July, this is not the case this time around. There were a couple releases that were contenders for DVD Pick of the Week, but in the end I went with This Film is Not Yet Rated - Buy from Amazon, but since I work in the industry, at least tangentially, my enjoyment of the movie may have been increased somewhat. It's still not up to the level of the pre-Christmas boom, or even the yearly average, but at least it's not a desolate wasteland either. On a side note, there is an immense flood of Blu-ray releases, including a few I thought were coming out previously.īusiness is starting to pick up again for DVD releases. One of them is the DVD Pick of the Week, I just don't know which one. Had the Blu-ray provided anything more than High Definition, or been a more reasonable price compared to the DVD, it would have been an easier choice. However, I found it impossible to decide which format was the better deal. There were a few other contenders for the title, including Dirty Harry Collection on DVD or Blu-ray. This was a bad week for big movies, with not a single first run release is even worth rating a solid purchase, never mind being a contender for DVD Pick of the Week.
